5 Foods to Avoid for Lung Health

Several disorders such as asthma, COPD, and bronchitis can cause the respiratory system to become weak. These disorders require a person to make several changes in their lifestyle to prevent flare-ups and complications. Following a balanced diet can help prevent the onset of the said conditions. There are certain foods that can hurt a weakened respiratory system. These foods can worsen the condition and aggravate the symptoms.
Here is a list of foods that must be avoided.

  1. Bacon
    A compound known as nitrate is added to packaged bacon. This compound acts as an artificial preservative; it extends the shelf life of bacon. In addition, nitrates add color to package cold cuts, making them look fresh for a long period of time. Cured meats, including bacon, hotdog, and ham, are foods that hurt a weakened respiratory system. This is because the nitrates present in these increase the risk of COPD and other lung disorders.
  2. Dairy-based ice cream
    One of the worst foods that hurt a weakened respiratory system is ice-cream made from dairy. Dairy products such as milk are rich in calcium. On the flip side, these also contain casomorphin. This compound is a breakdown product released from milk. This increases mucus and phlegm production in the respiratory system. Moreover, ice cream contains refined sugar. This increases inflammation inside the body. All of these can result in the aggravation of the symptoms of a lung or respiratory disorder.
  3. Broccoli
    Although broccoli is one of the healthiest foods, it does more harm than good for those with a weakened respiratory system. Broccoli is rich in antioxidants and anticarcinogens. However, it has the tendency to cause bloating and gas. This can make breathing difficult for a person with a weakened respiratory system. Thus, cruciferous veggies such as broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, and radishes can contribute to poor respiratory system health.
  4. Fried chicken
    Fried foods are another group of foods that are bad for a weak respiratory system. Fried chicken, onion rings, and French fries cause gas and bloating. This can cause discomfort and pain in the diaphragm, making breathing difficult. In addition, overconsumption of these foods can lead to obesity, straining the already weak lungs. Moreover, fried foods are rich in saturated and trans fats. Increasing bad cholesterol levels (LDlL) add to the risk of heart diseases as well.
  5. White pasta
    Refined flour and sugar are key ingredients in white pasta. Both of these lead to poor respiratory health. This is mostly because these require more energy from the lungs for metabolism.
